In the Yarn Garden CAL - Part 1, rounds 1-10

Finally it is time to start this CAL! I'm not much of a writer but I do like flowers a lot (you might have noticed). So let's just start this project by making a big flower :)

Materials and colors

For this tutorial I am using the yarn Järbo Nova and a 3.00 mm crochet hook.

Colors used on part 1 rounds:

Round 1 - Natural
Round 2 - Pistachio green
Round 3 - Lime
Round 4 - Coral
Round 5 - Yellow
Round 6 - Pink
Round 7 - Pink
Round 8 - Coral
Round 9 - Pink
Round 10 - Coral

Abbreviations

US terms used!

Instruction symbols

** – Repeat instructions between asterisks the amount of times specified.
      This repeat will consist of multiple instructions.

() – Instructions inside parentheses are made in the same stitch.

Hint: Hints are written in blue.

Special stitches, part 1

Puff stitch  (puff st) :
Yarn over, insert hook into specified st, yarn over again and pull up a long loop (3 loops on hook),
*yarn over, insert hook into same st, yarn over again and pull up a long loop*,
repeat * to * 4 times (11 loops on hook) {image 1}. 
Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook {image 2}. Ch 1 to close the puff stitch {image 3}.

puff st

Front post single crochet  (fpsc):
Insert hook from front to back around post of specified st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.


Front post treble crochet  (fptr) :
Yarn over twice {image 1}, insert hook from front to back around post of specified st {image 2}, yarn over and pull up a loop, *yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook*, repeat *to* 3 times {image 3}.

Instructions

Round 1

Start with a magic ring. Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc) and make 7 sc into the magic ring {image 1}. Join to the first ch with a sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends {image 2}.

Stitch count: 8 sc.

Round 1

Round 2

Start in any sc. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) or make a standing dc {image 1}. Ch 1 and dc in the same st {image 2}.

* (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st * repeat from * to * 7 times. {image 3}

Join to the third st of the beginning ch-3 or to the standing dc with a sl st.
Fasten off and weave in ends {image 4}.


Stitch count: 16 st's (16 dc) and 8 ch-1 spaces .

Round 2

Round 3

Start in any ch-1 space. Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc) or make a standing hdc {image 1}. Make 1 hdc in the same ch-1 space {image 2}.

* hdc in next 2 st's {image 3}. Make 2 hdc in next ch-1 space. *

Repeat from * to * 8 times, omitting the last 2 hdc on the last repeat {image 4}.

Join to the second st of the beginning ch-2 or to the standing hdc with a sl st. 
Fasten off and weave in ends {image 5}.

Stitch count: 32 hdc.

Round 3

Round 4

Start in any hdc. Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc) or make a standing sc {image 1}.

* ch 2, sk 1 st, sc in next st {image 2}. *

Repeat from * to * 16 times, omitting the last sc on the last repeat {image 3}.

Join to the beginning ch-1 or standing sc with a sl st. 
Fasten off and weave in ends {image 4}.

Stitch count: 16 st's (16 sc) and 16 ch-2 spaces.

Round 4

Round 5

Start in any ch-2 space. Ch 2 (counts as the first 3 loops of a puff st) {image 1}, make the rest of the puff st (instructions between ** of the puff st description found under special stitches above) {image 2}.

* Ch 2, Puff st in next ch-2 space {image 3} *

Repeat from * to * 16 times, omitting the last puff st on the last repeat {image 4}.

Join to the closing ch-1 of the beginning puff st with a sl st. 
Fasten off and weave in ends {image 5}.

Stitch count: 16 st's (16 puff st) and 16 ch-2 spaces.

Round 5

Round 6

Start in any ch-2 space. Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc) or make a standing sc {image 1}.

* Fptr around sc right below from r4 {image 2, 3 and 4}, sc in same ch-2 space {image 5}, fpsc around next puff st {image 6 and 7}, sc in next ch-2 space* 


Repeat from * to * 16 times, omitting the last sc on the last repeat.

Join to the beginning ch-1 or standing sc with a sl st. 
Fasten off and weave in ends {image 8}.

Stitch count: 64 st's (32 sc, 16 fpsc, 16 fptr).

Round 6

Round 7

Note! To make the it clearer I have used a different colour than the final one for this round in the first three images.

Start in any fptr. Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc) or make a standing sc {image 1}.

* dc in next 3 st's {image 2}, sc in next st {image 3}* 


Repeat from * to * 16 times, omitting the last sc on the last repeat {image 4}.

Join to the beginning ch-1 or standing sc with a sl st. 
Fasten off and weave in ends {image 5}.

Stitch count: 64 st's (16 sc, 48 dc).

hint: all sc's of this round are done in a fptr.

Round 7

Round 8

Start in any first dc of a 3 dc group. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) or make a standing dc {image 1}.

* Ch 1, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next st {image 2}, ch 1, dc in next st {image 3}, ch 5 {image 4}, 
sk 5 st, dc in next st {image 5} * 


Repeat from * to * 8 times, omitting the last dc on the last repeat {image 6}.

Join to the third st of the beginning ch-3 or to the standing dc with a sl st. 
Fasten off and weave in ends {image 7}.

Stitch count: 32 st's (32 dc) and 16 ch-1 spaces, 8 ch-2 spaces and 8 ch-5 spaces.

Round 8

Round 9

Start in any ch-1 space before a (dc, ch 2, dc) group. Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc) or make a standing sc
{image 1}.

* Sc in next st, (hdc, dc, hdc) in next ch-2 space {image 2}. Sc in next st, sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next st {image 3}. The following 5 st's are made in front of the ch-5 and in the skipped st's from r7 {image 4}. 
{dc, hdc, sl st, hdc, dc } in the next 5 st's {image 5 and 6}. Jump back to r8. 
Sc in next st {image 7}, sc in next ch-1 space * 


Repeat from * to * 8 times, omitting the last sc on the last repeat.

Join to the beginning ch-1 or to the standing sc with a sl st. 
Fasten off and weave in ends {image 8}.

Stitch count: 112 st's (8 sl st, 48 sc, 32 hdc, 24 dc).

Hint: It can be a bit tricky to work in front of the ch-5's of r8. Fold them back to make it easier.

Round 9

Round 10

This round is worked in the back loop only, BLO!

Start in any dc of a (hdc, dc, hdc)-group. Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc) or make a standing sc {image 1}. Ch 2 and sc in the same st {image 2}.

* Sc in the 6 next st's {image 3}. Sk the sl st but make a long sl st in the same st as the skipped sl st was made in {image 4 and 5}. Sc in the next 6 st's {image 6}, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next st * 


Repeat from * to * 8 times, omitting the last (sc, ch 2, sc) on the last repeat {image 7}.

Join to the beginning ch-1 or standing sc with a sl st. 
Fasten off and weave in ends {image 8}.

Stitch count: 120 st's (8 sl st, 112 sc) and 8 ch-2 spaces.

Round 10
